about

This song was written by Donald MacIntyre about what may be one of the most successful student pranks in history. For centuries, Scottish kings had been crowned on the Stone of Destiny until the English King Edward I (who Americans might know best as “the villain from Braveheart”) captured it and took it to Westminster Abbey in 1296. Then, in 1950, a group of Scottish students snuck into the abbey on Christmas Day and carried the Stone all the way back to Scotland. This song was written in praise of the group of students and, in the comical second half, in ridicule of “The Minister” at Westminster Abbey, who is described as pacing around and fretting upon discovering that the Stone was gone.
